Swedish massage is what most people picture when they envision "massage." It can incorporate several types of strokes: the long glide of effleurage, the kneading of petrissage, the percussion of tapotement, cross-fiber friction, compression, and rocking or shaking.
Swedish massage promotes relaxation, increases circulation, and relieves joint stiffness and tension. It has also been shown to decrease stress hormones and to stimulate the immune system.
